Well, I guess it depends on what you are calling "connected".

Verizon started out as Bell Atlantic, a pre-divestiture baby Bell, then 
merged with Nynex , an RBOC.

Then Bell Atlantic bought out GTE and changed their name to Verizon.

So, while your GTE group wasn't part of the old Bell System, MOST of 
Verizon was formed from former RBOCs.
