BSD is short for Berkeley Software Distribution. It's the name given to the fork of UNIX created by the University of California, Berkeley. Unlike Linux, which was written essentially from scratch, BSD has its roots in AT&T UNIX.

Apple's Mac OS X is based on BSD UNIX.

It's a bit unfair to call the GPL 'crap'. The intention of the GPL is to encourage open development and sharing of software. Thanks to the GPL, many large corporations (Google, IBM, Cisco, etc.) that have built their success on Linux, are 'forced' to give back to the community, something they would otherwise be disinclined to do.

Ugh. I feel like I'm at work. Can we talk about teletypes now?
