I never saw panel but I have seen step-by-step and was responsible for 5 crossbar and everything since then.
I loved elecromechanical circuit switched systems becuase you could stand in the exchnage and just listen to the sound of the relays and in many cases hear a problem. Of course the trouble panels and ticket systems helped. I later helped design and install / operate a system that would analyse the days trouble reports and ID the stuff that the night crew was assigned to DM.
But, in the end, the equipment of today (while silent and less fun to watch) is much more reliable. I was fortunate to get to the GNOC a few times in Bedminster and to see what happens behind the scenes at the Labs.

This is partially true
but
the facts are that the Internet is much more resilient than the dedicated
point to point truck circuit network used to be. Even with diverse
routing, nothing beats the Internet for rerouting and retransmission.
