I had known Tom Howard, even purchased a mod 32 from his place behind the
State House on Beacon Hill.
My first TU was one of his and I still have it. It was a reasonably
conventional design with 88mhy torroids, ability to run with and without
hard limiter, ability to "axis restore", an early DTC.
One cute trick he used as extra tuned circuit on the indicator CRT rather so
that you got a nice cross hair without the ellipses you got with just the
detector channel outputs.

I have three documents from him, I will make PDFs from and email to all
interested.

(2) TELEWRITER FREQUENCY SHIFT CONVERTER MODEL X

Subject: [GreenKeys] Anyone know about the Alltronics-Howard "Telewriter"
TUs?

In the early 1960s there were some RTTY terminal units manufactured
by Alltronics-Howard, the Howard being Tom Howard of the Boston area.
Last night I was reading some old issues of RTTY and saw an article
by Don Wiggins W4EHU. Apparently Irv Hoff had criticized the Alltronics
unit; and Don rebutted his criticism, saying he had a hand in its
design and it was a better design than Irv was giving it credit for.
Now Don Wiggins had a lot of credibility, being a professor of E.E.
in Florida as well as a ham, and having a fine understanding of things
both theoretical and practical. Either I had forgotten or I was never
aware of Don's connection to the Alltronics T.U. It would be interesting
now to know what was in the design and how it compares with the
competition. Irv at this point in time had designed his "Mainline"
T.U. which came before the TT/L and later models. Alltronics had
several models: there was a Model K about the time of Don's article
and a later model L that was reviewed in QST.

Any information will be appreciated.
