Here's something I'd never heard of: the IBM Radiotype.

http://www-03.ibm.com/ibm/history/exhibits/specialprod1/specialprod1_3.html

This was a RTTY-like system using IBM electric typewriters,
prototyped in 1931 and in small scale production by 1935. It was
used through WWII between some Army installations.

There were keyboard/printer units, tape punches, and
tape readers, so IBM had a whole system comparable to
Teletypes. 6 bit code, 600 chars/minute.

IBM decided that they didn't want to compete with AT&T,
though, so the Radiotype was never offered commercially.
