George---

Now you are making me wonder if I will ever tackle getting EITHER my 19 or my 28ASR back in operation.

	Typing Unit WD

Hello - - -

There appears to be two schools of thought with regard to the
methods of connecting selector magnets in parallel or series.

I have to agree with Jim haynes that selector magnet wiring as I
have seen it is usually done down in the electrical service units on
term strips A or B.

Assuming a desire for all typing unit magnets to be wired in the
same manner irregardless of whether or not it is the original or a
ready spare that has been used to replace a defective Typing Unit,
wiring in the LESU assures that selector magnets will all be wired
the same.

Don's diagram shows wiring that I have seen on a few machines, but
thought that it was done by someone who took "The Easy Way Out" and
did not bother to do or check, or was afraid of the wiring in the
LESU (It CAN be quite intimidating).

It takes a lot of patiernce to follow what appears to be a twisted
thought pattern in the wiring of various 28 equipments.

I recently had to re-do the wiring on my 28 3-speed Electric Shift
Keyboard, and it was a nightmare.

The beauty of and also the frightening thing about 28 wiring is that
it allows all manner of special features and adaptations that quite
often are not documented any where.

That's where a large-sized pad of graph paper, a pile of pencils,
and an ohmmeter, along with some of the standard wiring diagrams
(for comparison, color codes, and locations) and a massive amount of
patience allow one to really dope out how a machine is wired.

Nowadays it is quite unusual to find a 28 that is wired per a Bell
Or Western Electric spec. The machines are too far beyond the "just
came out of service" stage of life, and goodness knows how many
"experts" have been in there doing their thing!!!!!

Good luck to anyone tackling 28 wiring. As Chief Dan George said in
Eastwood's movie "Outlaw Josey Wales" : "Endeavor to Persevere".

And you are on your own with Western Union wiring.

W7TTY
