Not quite sure what is meant by the "automatic carriage return and linefeed"
in your description
Do you mean an automatic linefeed when it received a carriage return
character?
The "black tines" proper names were "stop bars" and the carriage return,
line feed, and figures stop bars were duplicated in the code ring cage. The
duplicate stop bars (toward the rear of the code ring cage or on the left if
viewing from the left side of machine) were used for actuating those
mechanisms when those codes were received.
The 98C had a mechanism that automatically forced a line feed anytime a
carriage return was received, but the other models only did an automatic
carriage return and line feed when the carriage reached the 73rd character
position on the platen (77th in weather symbol equipment) regardless if a
carriage return was received. So if a carriage return was received (either
properly or because of a garbled character) without a following line feed,
you could experience overtyping if the line never reached the 73rd character
position.
I guess the tie-wrap made the other models a 98C with a simple field mod.
Pretty cool!
