Below is the letter from Mike at NIST. It describes the radio controlled clock he's trying to locate.

Thanks to all for input on the clock. Much appreciated.

Larry,

Thanks for the information about the WU clocks. Very interesting. NIST has considered putting WWV audio on the web in the past, but it hasn't been done yet. I'll add your name to the list of people who have requested it.

I'm trying to find information about the first radio controlled clock that could automatically set itself to a digital time code. NBS/NIST has been broadcasting a digital time code on WWV since 1960, and on WWVB since 1965. The ESE product you are describing didn't read the time code, although they later built models that did. I have one here.

The first product I know of that meets my criteria was the Develco 3391, which received WWVB on 60 kHz and appeared in 1968 or 1969. That's a few years after the time code appeared, so there may been something earlier. As a clock connoisseur, I just wondered if you knew of an earlier product. I think ESE was founded in the 70s, which rules their products out.

If you are interested, I wrote a historical article about radio controlled clocks in 2003 that you can download: http://tf.boulder.nist.gov/general/pdf/1877.pdf

Thanks and have a great day,

Mike
