It appears to me that they were molded in a dark greenish color.  Very
close to black but not quite.  I'll reconfirm tonight.  It at least
looked that way in the garage.

Could be either I suppose but the key would be that it probably waits
to update the display buffer in gross ways until the video is in the
vertical retrace period.  So, if you send something that causes the
screen to scroll or clears a line, you probably need to insert nulls
to allow the worst case time for it to get to the top of the retrace
interval and do that operation.
