Depending on the speakers you may find it makes a
difference if heavier wire or shorter leads are used. The
difference is not in the high frequencies or clearity but in
the damping at the low end and around the cross-over
frequency for multi-way speaker. Some speakers may actually
sound better with some series resistance, some will sound
best when driven by an essentially constant voltage source.
Some systems will sound better when connected to the "wrong"
impedance on the amplifier (assuming it has taps, a lot of
solid state ones don't).
Even if you have damaged hearing you can still certain
kinds of differences.
My own hearing is odd, I have a deep loss in a broad
band around 5khz but can still hear 12K or even more. It
makes it difficult to understand speech especially in the
presence of noise.
