One of my little pleasures in life was attending the Wescon show
in Los Angeles back in the mid '70s and seeing a toroid winder in
action.

Basic operation:

1. there are three capstan drive rollers that work like a three jaw
chuck to hold the core.

2. There is a shuttle bobbin, shaped like a large ring, that is split
and goes through the center of the toroid.

3. Step one is to load a pre-determined length of wire onto the
shuttle.

4. Step two is to then unwind the wire from said shuttle and
around the toroid core.

VERY simple when you see it in action. Definitely an "Ah ha!"
moment.
