And some of us, even older yet perhaps, remember that the stuff is  
made from the shells of the lac bug, and have some flake shellac to be  
mixed with alcohol when needed so that it be fresh, and that a "one  
pound cut" is (I *think*) a pound of such flakes in a gallon of  
denatured alcohol. Which alcohol is hygroscopic, thus leading to  
reduced effectiveness if it sits around much in a less than tightly  
sealed container.

Boatanchor content:  any wooden cased radio or accessory that was made  
before the mid-30's is likely finished with shellac.  Such as the  
small oak-wood cased telephone company patch panel at this QTH.
