Never forget that the answer-back and reader contacts are in parallel  
with the keyboard.

I know I sound like an old mother hen,  but all of those parallel  
contacts can drive you crazy sometimes.

The first move is to compare the bit patterns for the keys you are
pressing with those for the characters you are getting.  It may be
that a single bit is coming up wrong, which narrows down where you
have to look.
