Don,

I can't imagine the AP really cared about being closer
to the European speeds as it wasn't as if the individual
AP members would be sending network wide material
into Europe.

I know there were international links for the AP, but
my guess would be that any stories intended to be sent
on the international side would have been either via
dedicated tape readers (in those days) or dedicated
data ports off computer systems, where the speeds could
be set in software.

I had only limited experience with being in an AP state
bureau, 1978-1979, Raleigh, and the only time I ever saw
anything close to using paper tape for transmission was
associated with the election of 1978. Tech Charlie
Brown, who had been a tape operator in earlier years,
set up a tape punch for additional elections material and
the output of the TD went into the computer system for
incorporation into the state feeds, SC and NC. This
method was done because the bureau didn't have enough
electronic terminals and we went to back to a mechanical
input for a special event.

Otherwise, at the state bureau level, I can't imagine the
AP being concerned about European speeds, other than a
study that they work.
