Sure - used to use it a lot before some of the "modern" 
polishing "stuff" came out...   Arm and hammer is good for 
cleaning - though a bit rough for final polishing - other 
less "aggressive" pastes are better for that.

I have keep a full set of buffing compounds, standard for 
"stick" set like Sears sells; all three "grades" of Novus 
for cleaning and polishing plastic; and for really blemish 
and spider web free finish polish - NicSand 10,000 grit 
Sanding Gel (though I think NicSand is out of business now - 
so it's getting harder to find).

Still - tooth paste is handy - and very useful for a lot of 
cleaning and polishing...
