Actually there are pipe organs and there are pipe organs. Randy is
correctly referring to theatre organs which are generally
electro-pneumatic. But the organs preferred by classical organists
have no relays and are purely mechanical. Tracker organs as they are
called are wonderful assemblies of rods and rocker arms, the keys
directly controlling the pallets that let in the air. Having been
built for four centuries they are as the manual typewriter is to the
Selectric. Mechanical all the way.
