Most of my recent de-rusting experience has been with bigger stuff (woodworking machinery); electrolysis for the big stuff, and Evapo-Rust for the little stuff. The one lesson I learned is that blued items are not completely safe in Evapo-Rust. Without thinking, I dropped a blued handle into my jug of Evapo-Rust one night. The next morning I pulled out a nice silver coloured handle. Oops.
The bright side is that I learned how to do ye-olde-fashioned rust bluing with household chemicals, which is a simple and satisfying process with surprising results.
