[GreenKeys] ST-8000 Mark Space Baud Rate Tuning

I bought a used ST-8000 about two years ago with every
tone pair and baud rate stored in the 8 memory locations.
I've used it for all that time and never touched the main
tuning knob.  The other day I decided to plug in a mark,
space and baud rate that I did not have in memory.  To
my surprise, the main tuning knob changes nothing!
I've got the VAR-RX/TX in the VAR position.  Nothing
happens when I turn the main tuning knob.  I've even
resorted to reading the manual.  Am I overlooking something
or does this thing need to go back to our friends at HAL?
Any ideas?
