You got me going again...

In about 1927 my dad was a Navy brat traveling on the USS Henderson  
from the west coast to the Philippines where his father was  
stationed.  He met an Army brat by the name of L. Ron Hubbard and the  
two of them liked to toss a ball back and forth on the deck... sorta  
like volleyball.  Well one day about noon the two were at their sport  
when dad missed the ball and it went right down the Charlie Noble and  
into the soup the cook was making.  Both of the guys were scared of  
punishment and hid out until supper time.  Nothing was said so they  
were relieved.
As most sailors know the Charlie Noble is the vent or "smoke stack"  
from the ship's kitchen.

You cannot make this stuff up...
