I was resisting the urge to comment on this thread, but this comment finally drew me out.

This is EXACTLY why I snipe.  Bidding early just "sticks the twig in the hornet's net".  Why draw/challenge another bidder's bid and STIMULATE THE FEELINGS expressed above?  If the competitive drive kicks in and he DOES then bid, it just serves to DIG DEEPER into EVERYONE pocket...ad nauseum...round-and-round...deeper-and-deeper...(read: $higher-and-$higher)!!
