You can get non-detergent mineral oil at any aviation maintenance hangar. Its
cheap. It is used for engine break in.

I believe regular 3 in 1 oil has a solvent in it so it
changes viscosity with age. 3 in 1 also sells regular SAW 20
machine oil under its brand. This is _not_ the same stuff as
the regular 3 in 1 and seems to be perfectly satisfactory
for small motor bearings and similar applications. I have no
idea what gives 3 in 1 its odor but it does not smell like
Citronella oil to me. I grew up with Michigan mosquitoes and
chiggers and we wore Citronella to keep them off. Actually,
I think it attracted them.
Nye sells very highly refined oil in several
viscosities. More expensive than 3 in 1 and will probably
have to be ordered via the web (see Tai Oils for small
quantities) but is superior stuff.
Also, I think the detergent in motor oil is supposed to
prevent the generation of "lacquer" from heating of various
substances from combusion. I don't know if it works at lower
temperatures. Also note that if you decide to use motor oil
the synthetics may be slipperier and longer lasting.
