One can certainly find foam plastic sound _absorbent_
material but I am not sure that's what you want. If the
material is that old it was likely horse-hair felt
impregnated with something. Such material was common in
typewriters. Beside having some absorbent property it was
also a vibration damping material. You may be able to find a
suitable material at an auto parts store. I have not tried a
Google search but it will likely find the right kind of
material.
