Here in Syracuse, all the DC from Niagra Mohawk was shut off in 1952. 
The buildings needing DC had  motor generators installed at the 
utilitiy's cost. I worked on many of the elevators  and the MG sets.  I 
know of four of them, now dormant, that could be running and inspected  
within a week.  I am fairly certain Western Union took  DC service until 
1939, when the power system in the building was  revamped in 
anticipation of the war. The switchboards are still there in the 
basement, about 99% dead now. The elevators were changed to 2 speed AC 
control in 1939 as well. The top two floors of the building were active 
with Western Union into the 1990's.
