One major reason 25 cycles was used for so long on railraods is properly
designed series wound traction motors could run on it almost as well as
DC. The New Haven Railroad used 11,000 volts 25 cycles on the overhead
line, but Grand Central staion was 600 volts DC third rail. The
locomotives or "motors" as they were called could easily use either
power source, and could run all the way in to Grand Central. There was
25 cycles at Shea's theater in Buffalo until early this century, and at
least one model 15 with a governed motor was powered from it. I will
make a guess there were a few power supplies for model 19s that could
work on 25 cycles as well, can anyone confirm yes or no?
