Ho All:

I will do my best to explain this...

The first thing one must do is set the Data-Tek for the
loop current of the machine under test..

>From the manual, page 5-4:

Loop Curent Adjustment

Loop Current Adjustment is achieved by using the Analyzer
LOOP ma meter.

1 Set Generator to ASCII Mode, MK

2 Set Interface Sigs Out path to Tip+ and Sigs In path to
Tip, then set Analyzer to Loop in ma.

3 Insert Tip-sleeve type patch cord from LOOP IN to LOOP
Out. Read ma meter.

4. Using a mall screwdriver, adjust 20, 60 ma pot (thru
Panel) for correct reading on meter.

Now, for the meat of this message...

These are the settings I used to feed and check my Model
15, and print out using the built-in Fox message from the
machine:

Loop Out - set to Tip+, Sigs Out. Loop Current 60 ma. set
as above.

Mode: Set to Baudot, Cont.

Sigs Out Generator - Set to Center Position of top 3 way
switch, all other switches off.

Parity off (for Baudot machines - needed for Ascii
machines)

Code Lever Stop: [5] - 2.0

Bit Rate for 60 WPM machines, 45.5 Baud

Bias Switch to Loop IN

20/60/Polar switch to 60 (ma)

Plug machine into One of the Loop Out jacks. Set Step
Switch to CONT, and watch your machine print out the Quick
Brown Fox Message.

Now if testing a faster machine set baud rate to the one
applicable.

To test an ASCII machine, you need to set it to ASCII at
the correct speed. and loop current (20 for most ASR-33's).

Stop and parity must also be set properly..

One of the great features of these machines is to check a
machine with a distorted signal, giving an idea what sort
of distortion it can operate under. This can be done using
the Distorttion switch which can be set for MB [mark bias],
SB [Late transition Space Bias]. of SWB [alternates on
character basis.

Then using the % control, select the degree of distortion
on the leading edge of each space bit [Bias]

The Higher it can be set, the more tolerant your machine is
to external distortion of the signal it is being few -
overall the quality of the machine's settings.

I hope this is understandable. It is the best I can do at
this point for those with Data-Tek 9600's they would love
to use.

I found it a very valuable tool as I restored this Model
15.

One note: as we found out while working on the machine, the
Data-Tek doesn't send a CR LF LTRS LTRS so there
is not enough time for the CARRIAGE to return at the end of
the line, which may result in an off doubling of characters
at the end of the line.
