Thanks for the various comments on Evaporust.

It appears to be unobtainable in England but I have found a supplier of 
an alternative/similar product which they claim to be superior(of course).

I am testing this out and was interested in other experiences. I am 
particularly interested in its ability to only attack rust and to leave 
paint , legends etc, alone. This one claims to be safe on anything with 
one exception which is magnesium. I am keen to try it on an intricate 
mechanism, like a teleprinter mechanism, or something like a telephone 
switching uniselector that has been badly rusted up and impractical to 
derust any other way. It has copper contacts etc which one would not 
want to subject to any traditional acid treatments.
