I was just reading some material in the 1950 edition of "Radio Engineering Handbook" edited by Keith Henney. A chapter on code transmission and reception was written by John Moore and David Rau of RCA. They mention modulating the HF signal with an audio tone of less than 1KHz to provide some frequency diversity.
