An additional characteristic, at least for mills used to type radiograms, is that the typewriter have a 1 in the number row of the keyboard (as opposed to a lower case L as in most typewriters) and a slash through the zero.
We have three mills in service at KSM, two Royal 440s that are original to the station and one Underwood acquired on eBay which is the same model shown in historic photos of KPH. The Underwood has been overhauled while the Royals, being relatively modern, are being used as-is.
I personally have a portable mill that I have used for copying radiograms on the National Traffic System.
