    I know, there was always a family discussion before 
making a long distance call.
    You could always tell because people tended to shout on 
long distance. Also, you could shut people up toot-de-sweet 
by saying "Quiet, I'm talking LONG DISTANCE!"  I think 
Western Union survived for a long time because telegrams 
were cheaper than long distance calling. The curious thing 
is that the Bell System used to subsidize long distance out 
of local tarrifs to make them more affordable. I think this 
was one of the things that lead to the break-up.
