[GreenKeys] Another Internet Outage

I worked at a place that purchased Model 33ASR's
directly from Teletype to be used as computer
terminals with an acoustic modem we built.
Every once in awhile a part would break inoneof our 33's.
Our in-house "repairman" would just take the part out of a Bell
System 33ASR TWX machine that was used to receive orders.
Then it would be called in for service.
The Bell TTY man would come within hours, replace the
part, have a cup of coffee, and leave.
He never asked anyone where the part went.

That's when I decided I wanted to be a Bell System
TTY repairman!

(The next time the TTY guy come to replace a part, I asked
if they were hiring. He gave me his dispatcher's number.
In a week I was a Bell System TTY repairman! Died and went
to heaven...)

I thought the FCC dropped this idea (?)
The old Ma Bell system had some problems but remember
you were renting a service and all of its parts were
compatible. "Foreign" equipment could screw up the system. I
think AT&T would have been ahead of the game by an approval
process for outside stuff, but they were big and rigid.
Also remember that if anything broke the friendly
installer (and they were friendly) would come and fix it
free. If you broke the phone they would install a new one
free.
I wonder if there are others on the list old enough to
remember staying on the line when placing a long distance
call to hear the circuit being built? At one time it really
was the "Voice with a Smile".
