I recall that Telex operators were always trained to end lines with CR 
LF LTRS LTRS LTRS. ie Three letter shifts.

The standard printer in the UK was the Creed No 7 where the platen moves 
and not the type head. Therefore some page printers were very sluggish 
at returning the carriage and the three shifts gave plenty of time.
