Thank you all. I've been lurking for a while, Jeff
Angus is the one who convinced me I should join. I've been
fascinated with teletype machines for a great many years. I
used to read the articles in CQ magazine years ago and had
(maybe still have) the little collection of teletype
newsetters published around the late 1950s. My problem at
the moment is lack of space but I've dreamed of having maybe
a Model 15 clacking merrily away. When I was a kid I had a
friend at KFI and used to go over in the evenings to visit.
I remember their little news room with maybe half a dozen
machines. Usually at least three of them would be printing
out something. Fascinating to watch. There is nothing else
with that sound or nice oily smell. I don't remember exactly
what was there but probably Associated Press, United Press,
International News Service (that will date me) City News
Service and the Weather Bureau. I think something else,
maybe a wire from NBC since KFI was a very important NBC
affil. An old-fashioned big-knob station the likes of which
we will never see again. BTW, KFI's control rooms were all
connected with telegraph keys. I think NBC was the same.
