Although nothing like that, one of my middle school science fair projects was a
32 bit binary adder-subtractor built out of relays. I don't remember exactly
but this was somewhere around 1970-71. I used a massive amount of 120 volt DC
coil 4PDT rectangular metal can relays, panel mount toggle switches, and neon
lamps. I remember my biggest problem at the time was the 120 volt DC power
supply but I did eventually get the whole thing to work right.
I got second place, first place went to a kid whose parents donated a mint to
build a new gym.
