In 1970/71 - I went through Polaris Electronics "A" & "C"
schools at Dam Neck, VA. That was where I ran into my first
model 28 - in the HAM shack at Dam Neck (also the first 390,
WRR-2, URA-8 and so on). Anyway - having caught the tty bug
- I set about seeing what I could get for myself. Wasn't
until a couple years later I managed to get my first
(through 113th) machine - but I did make some interesting
contacts "on the beach". I met a gentleman who owned a
communication company / shop in Norfolk who did a lot of
maritime work (IIRC - everything from simple receivers;
LORAN, Pathfinders, and so on. He "claimed" to be a Mite
dealer as well - supplying them for weather and such. How
much of his story was "true" and how much BS - I don't know
- I became suspicious because the used Mite "needing some
TLC" that he promised to sell me as soon as some "details"
were worked out never happened. He did, how ever / where
ever he got them - have a few mites in his shop in various
states of condition. I recall one that was running - but
would occasionally let out a squeal like a stuck pig... and
blow a fuse.
At the time - I had no reason to doubt he was selling them
to people for shipboard use - I just don't know where he was
getting them (Mil surplus???)
just my .02 on the subject
