Larry,

Both of mine work like new. The military still is ordering ribbon
cartridges for these.
In certain environments with heat and sand the Army has had lots of
failures of computers.
My friend Warren Brader was training soldiers on using the 74B and 74C
back in Iraq.

I have had the same problem as you are writing about with Model 40
printers. I have not
figured out exactly what happens but I believe it is a combination of
the type of lubricant,
the type of ink in the ribbon, plus heat and the composition of the
platen.

My UGC-74A and B are in my nice cool basement and I do not run them
very much.
The military, of course, has the advantage of being able to replace
parts much easier
than you or I do.

Good luck,
Don
