Mee too. Had a -74 with the standard underwood ribbon. Sure was a beautiful
thing. I bet a tank could roll over it without so much as a scratch. When
it arrived from ebay (yes, I paid to have it shipped) all the goo was
everywhere. It was so thick! I gave up even thinking about cleaning it and
put it out on the street for garbage. But because it was so heavy (100lbs?)
I had to tape a $20 bill to it for them to take it!

How did the military ever live with some TTY's? I'm working on two military
TTY's, the (notorious) 74A and the later 74B.
This stuff was supposed to be the best of the best for the armed forces.
The platen on the 74A simply disolved into a gooie mess one day and "melted"
onto all of the 80 hammers that beat on the ribbon that beats against the
rotating drum.
Well, I cleaned up that mess and used heat shrink to establish a new platen
cover. But for one intermittent hammer, it works....amazingly!
Two 74B's have blown parts in the pin driver print card....the one remaining
works. It's working fine for now, the two will await a miracle that I find
new print head driver cards.
These are amazing works of engineering but, somehow they just don't seem to
be what is needed by a military dependent upon results.....I wonder what
they're using today.
