After WW-II Teletype Corp. developed an electronic time-division multiplex and demonstrated it to the Navy. One of the engineers on the project was a former Western Union operator who had learned the trick of sending "The quick brown fox..." backwards. Which he proceeded to do as part of the demonstration.
