Hi Nico,
Thanks to Siemens, I have some global Telex figures for you. The data that I have comes from the 1978 Siemens Pocket Diary. The statistics are listed in the back of the book where the Siemens Offices are listed and is captioned Useful Information.
While the pocket diary was issued for 1978, the Telex information is actually taken from 1976 data, probably close to the peak of worldwide Telex deployment. Unfortunately, this is the last data that I can find as later Siemens Pocket Diaries omit this detailed Telex information.
The 1978 Siemens Pocket Diary shows total Telex connections by County as well as connections per 10,000 population and percentage increase over data for 1975. It also shows the different country codes where applicable. So, this provides a very useful view of Telex at or near its peak.
The bottom line is 905,000 worldwide Telex connections at 31 December 1976. Interesting to note that the highest number of connections per 10,000 population was in Switzerland where there were 24,400 connections. GDR plus Fed Rep of Germany total was 175,400. USA was 127,000 but a smaller number per 10,000 population than Europe. Canada was 40,200 with a penetration rate similar to Europe.
