The absolute best place I have found is San Diego Hardware.
Been in the same location since 1869...
Not only do they have an amazing inventory of fasteners, but the
customers are not allowed to touch the containers.
You tell the clerk what you want and they get it for you.
I bought a T-shirt with their name on it. Kind of odd for a souvenir,
but I am strange anyway, just ask my wife.
The assortment of other items is also quite amazing. How would you
like a drawer pull on your dresser in the form of frogs mating?

If you go to an older, established Ace Hardware Store, you can usually
find
a little room in back where you have to ask the guy for the bolt size
you
need. Surprisingly, they will have obscure sizes that people at Home
Depot
simply scratch their heads and walk away from when you inquire. I buy
special hardware to rebuild switchboard drop sections where I don't
want to
have to tap the screw holes to fit a more conventional bolt.
