You are so right... and correct too! ;-)

The head thickness is not that important in my view. As for the
threads going all the way... that can be fixed with the use of a die
and some thread cutting oil.
I have found a good (and prompt) source for fasteners on-line at: http://www.boltdepot.com/

Thanks for keeping me honest Robert! I am getting a cataract in my
left eye so you are not alone...

I will point out that you aren't likely to find bolts with the head
shown at consumer grade places like Home Depot. 1/2"-13 UNC is one of
the two common thread diameters and pitches. But the head thickness
is going to be roughly 3X that shown. And probably the 1/2" (length)
of shank nearest the head will be unthreaded. Standard spec for Hex
Head Cap Screws (the proper name) is that lengths from 0 to 1" are
threaded to the head. Over 1". only 1" is threaded. If the length is
over 1" and it is threaded to the head, it's usually either a
specialty fastener or a machine screw. The screw pictured is a
specialty.

REF: Machinery's Handbook, any Edition since 1914.

Note that by definition in various standards, a screw is always or
normally intended to be tightened or loosend by turning its head. A
bolt is always or normally intended to be tightened or loosened by
turning the nut into which it is inserted. Thus, clearly, the item
pictured below is a screw, not a bolt. :-) My cataracts
notwithstanding.
