Someone mentioned SpeakEasy Speed Test in an earlier
post.

There is also another site, among others, that may have a
larger pool of servers to test speed:

With this site, I can check one of two local servers to
determine more accurately the actual speed I
have back to my ISP.  Using SpeakEasy Speed Test,
I am actually checking the entire internet path back to
the selected site in North America. 

Very recently, there was a fiber optic cable break and
much of the internet traffic to my home ISP was
rerouted.  I was getting close to 2 megs download speed
from my ISP, but when using SpeakEasy with a US based
server, the internet speed was very, very low at times.
