On smaller locomotives, such as "yard engines" the engineer acutally manually changed the pole configuration of the wheel motors, at least out here in the wilds of the Central California foothills... I somewhere have a switch panel from a "yard engine" that was used by San Joaquin Valley Railroad in Exeter California... gunna go try and find it... I recall the switch contacts were about 3/8 inch in diameter each and the switch handles rotated 90 degrees from position one to position two...

Thanks so  much for the information and the link...    now if I can rig the sync motor in my model 15 as a two pole device rather than four and get up to 100 speed.......   heeheehee
