I don't understand the reasoning that we have to destroy a cache of
old items because it wouldn't be "fair" to those people who bought
them for a significant price when they were scarce.

Under this sort of reasoning, we should limit the number of computers
produced because early purchases of computers spent a significant
amount of money to obtain one.
