In the Bell System we commonly called these "French Phones."
Every once in a while someone would ask if we could convert them
to work on their phone line.  Even my MOTHER!

So eventually Western Electric came out with their Design Line phones.
One was a French style.  At first they were kits.  I put one together  
for
Mom.  You have to be careful not to pick up the handset too quickly
or you will bruise your lips!
