Someone at Western Union suggested that 7/8 inch tape be used for
ASCII transmission.
By saving 1/8 inch of paper, more rolls could be purchased at the same
price as 1" tape.
Not ever having worked on or seen a built for WUTCo 33 I do not know
if they eliminated
the parity (8th) level or not.
I never have tried to use 7/8 tape in a Bell 33 or 35. I doubt it
would work very well.
Dataspeed (BRPE) machines and Model 20 TDs were set up to be able to
handle
7/8 tape from the factory, usually with the advanced feed hole. A M28
TD could also
be modified to send 7 level tape with advanced feed hole.
Of course the same thing was applied to the 2B Strip Printer. WUTCo
used 5/16" wide
tape and the Bell M14 Tape Printer used 3/8" wide tape. However the
M14 will print fine
with 5/16" wide tape.
More trivia from the old days. Not that anyone cares.

A friend of mine who is helping out a very elderly printer in the
last stages of clearing out his shop has for sale a case of 7/8 inch
Teletypesetter tape. It's a case of 32 rolls (though it may be short
a couple of rolls - I didn't check closely), 8 inch rolls on 2 inch
cores.
The box label does not indicate that it is oiled. In origin this is
ex-GSA (possibly military).
I can't say anything in regard to its condition - it has been stored
in a damp Chicago basement for many years. I got another box from the
same
stack, but I don't yet have an operating 6-level punch to test it, so
I don't
know. They're looking to sell the whole case as one lot, and don't
really
have much time in the chaos of a pending building sale.
In any case, if you're interested please drop me a note offlist and I'll
put you in touch with the seller.
