>From the Teletype Corporation Bulletin No. 200, dated September, 1947

"The Model 31 Teletype Tape Printer is designed for use in types of
services

where weight and space considerations are limiting factors. In
addition to being

readily adaptable to land circuits, it is particularly suited to
two-way aircraft-

to-ground communication over radiotelephone facilities and operates
without

interfering with telephone communication. It is equally adaptable for
use

in automotive vehicles or water-born craft."

The manual explains the 31 can be operated with a 26.5 volt motor or

a 26.5 volt motor/generator which generates voltages for an associated
"converter-

control unit".

>From Western Union Specification 11671-A dated October 3, 1957:

"Teleprinter Model 31 is a light weight portable machine used to
provide temporary

facilities for handling press at sports and other special events".

The specification mentions an AC-DC 115V governed motor for this
configuration.
