Hello All
I'm a recent subscriber to Greenkeys.
My experience with teletypes goes back to the early 60's where I was a
teletype operator in the dutch PTT. At that time Siemens equipment was used,
T100's and T68'ø (IIRC). Those were used for the Gentex system, i.e. Dial-up
system for (mainly) European PTT's. We also had an "emergency exit" for
selected offices. This room was equipped with fixed lines, and used Model
14's.
In 1968 I moved to the European Space Org. in Darmstadt/Germany, where they
used 110 BPS Siemens equipment, but still Baudot code.
After moving to Denmark, I lost first-hand action on teleprinters, but as my
wife was a teleprinteroperator in Copenhagen, I still had some "hear-say".
At present I'm working on a project for the danish IT museum, where I'm
setting up a mini-Gentex net with a variety of printers. Currently, I have a
Siemens T100S running and at T1000S. I have a Teletype model 43, a Siemens
T100S and a T1000S on the operating table. I will also look at a 33ASR, a
Lorenz machine, and a StandardElectric.
Most of these machines have different requipments regarding speed, cuurent
loop, character set, etc., but all this can be handled in my software, which
at present supports 8 printers. The interface used (where needed), is Gil
Smith's project from 2004.
As far as I know, the model 43 has never been used as a PTT device in
Denmark, but it was used as a computer terminal on some pre-PC IT systems.
Ink ribbons etc. are not to be found in Denmark. How is the situation in the
USA (and other places) ?
Hope to enjoy Greenkeys !
