Amateur Radio Teletype Society and VHF Teletype Society were two 
organizations in the New York city area which seem to have been
the same group - I don't know why there were two different names.
Their early publications were produced on TTY machines, using multi-copy
paper and punched tape equipment.  They seemed able to get Western Union
junk; and I've also heard that a lot of Model 12 machines came out of
the New York Police Dept. when they were forced to upgrade to more modern
machines because Teletype no longer made parts for the 12s.

Most operation was on 2 meters using AFSK tones; and they tended to run
quite a bit of power to get what coverage they could.  At the time it
was not legal to use FSK on HF.  There was limited use of make-and-break
keying for RTTY on HF.

Later the organization moved to a printed bulletin which came out rather
irregularly.  Wayne Green W2NSD was the bulletin editor, and also wrote
a bimonthly RTTY column in CQ magazine.  At times the organization claimed
to be the "national" RTTY society.  However it never achieved as much
national coverage as the RTTY magazine put out by Merrill Swan W6AEE
and the Southern California Radio Teletype Society.  Wayne went on to
become the editor at CQ.  There were internal dissensions; and eventually
the ARTS organization faded away.
