I visited Tobyhanna's military base in Maryland about 6 or 7 years ago.
In particular I visited the building where they restore all the
military's communications gear, including, believe it or not, TTY
equipment. When I was there they were doing total refurbishing of TTY
communications shelters that had the old TT-100's, TT-4, etc., (most
which had already been done). He said they still had guys on staff that
are trained in on the TTY machines. BTW, I saw several KWM-2A
transceivers in large roll around baskets that also had new high-tech
equipment radios stacked along side of them, all being distributed to
various specific work stations where they would be refurbished. I
finally had to ask them why they were messing with the old TTY stuff.
The guy told me that most of that stuff was there from other countries
for rebuilding and subsequent usage again. The TTY buildings belonged
to the S. Korean military. Some of it belonged to S. African countries.
He said that although we may consider it obsolete equipment, other
countries use this stuff all the time and prefer the ruggedness of it in
areas where power surges and other problems (software failures, etc.)
make the computers useless. It was really pretty interesting to see all
that stuff again. .............Mike.
