Check out this web site of the old West Coast Tape Relay that Duncan
mentioned. Scroll down and you will see a photo of the AN/FGC-30 
Central Office Teletype system (Tape Relay station) then in use.

This was an Army CommCenter, closed in the late 60s. It was
replaced by the AUTODIN Switching Center at McClellan AFB in Calif.
